Electrified methane reforming: Elucidating transient phenomena

Increasing implementation of renewable energy requires an infrastructure compatible with the intermittent production green electricity. Herein we show flexibility electrically heated steam methane reforming integrated ohmic heating, through a combination CFD modelling and lab scale reactor tests. It is shown how start-up from idle state to operation conditions can be achieved instantaneous application full power required for steady conversion 80%, initial heating rates exceeding 50 °C/min. The rate correlated thermal mass reactor, endothermic reaction governing temperature profile. Cyclical displays no apparent delay between change in conversion. highest gradient across washcoat predicted at state, increase during despite higher rates. risk carbon formation inlet operation.
